Buy online, pick-up in store (BOPIS) shopping took off during the pandemic, when customers wanted to avoid contact with salespeople. It has since become commonplace for retailers large and small, which means it has become a huge target for fraud.
BOPIS fraud happens when fraudsters leverage stolen accounts and account data to purchase and pick up merchandise before the victims see the charge on their statements or in their apps. With the added benefit to fraudsters of no shipping address to check, they can make purchases from multiple store locations with the same account information in a quick period of time.
BOPIS fraud has increased up to 250%, forcing businesses to spend additional time distinguishing between suspicious and legitimate orders.
